Verona Man Dies in Fight Over Mindanao in the Philippine Islands

Second Lieutenant James S. Randolph, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie F. Randolph of 45
Linden Avenue, Verona, was reported killed in action October 26, according to a telegram
received by his parents Monday. He would have been twenty-one years old on October 27.

Bombardier - Navigator on a B-24 Liberator, Lt. Randolph was killed in combat over
Mindanao in the Philippines, according to the notification. A letter to his parents dated
October 25 said he had been on his first mission over Borneo, so Mr. and Mrs. Randolph
figure he died on his second or third mission.

Lt. Randolph enlisted on November 6, 1942. He was trained at Coe College, Cedar Rapids,
Ia., and four California air bases, including March, Santa Ana, Victorville and Hamilton
Fields. He received his wings and Commission at Victorville May 24, 1944, and left from
Hamilton to go to New Guinea in September.

Aresident of Verona since he was one and a half years old, Lt. Tandolph was a graduate of
Verona High School. He palyed on that school's football team as well as that of Newark
Academy, where he went to school for a year.

He had been employed by Westinghouse in Kearny before entering the service. Besides his
parents, he leaves a brother, Richard, a student at Verona High School, and his
grandmother, Mrs. Carrie McBride of Verona. His father is assistant secretary of the Central
Hanover Bank & Trust Co., New York.
